Ambrose Akinmusire Kansas City Concert reviews
Lion King
Last time we thought it was an event but this time we understood it was a performance. There is a difference. We saw LK the last time it was here in Houston and enjoyed it a lot with the passage of many years. The story line is thin, adapted from a Disney movie targeted at young children, however. The acting was almost non-existent; the music was so-so. An audience of children isn't really ready for complex musical themes, is it? Everything is at full volume, no nuance; I object to the "miking" of all performers with the possible exception of children. It also gives rise to the suspicion that the whole thing is pre-recorded and the performers are lip-syncing. On the plus side, the staging, costumes, and particularly the puppetry were, as before, brilliant for managing the short attention spans of those same children. But do we need all those "fart" jokes with the warthog? Really? Cheap shot.
